Merrillville Mourns Coach Lafey Armontrout

The Pirate Family lost a colleague and legend last Thursday with the passing of Coach Lafey Armontrout who taught and coached in Merrillville for 39 years.  He is a member of the MHS Coaches Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Indiana Track Hall of Fame.  He was 90 years old and lived a good life mainly in the world of sports in Northwest Indiana.  After leaving the Pirates he went to Crown Point where he coached under Merrillville alumni Dennis Bunda and Head Boys' Track Coach Keith Iddings and coached our own boys' track coach Patrick Coffey as well as Luis Lopez.  Mike Krutz was also one of his students.  He was a mentor to thousands of students and athletes and left a lasting impression on many young men and women during his tenure.  We ask that you keep his family in your prayers.  Always remember . . . Once a Pirate, Always a Pirate.  May he rest in peace.
