• Extracurricular Activities



    Cross Country-Fall
    6th Grade Students must have a current physical on file to participate. Students practice and have meets with the 7th & 8th Grade Pierce Middle School students at the High School. Some meets are held at other schools.


    Flag Helpers
    Two 6th Grade students raise the American and Indiana State flag at 7:45am and take them down at 2:15 pm everyday. Teachers recommend students at the beginning of the school year.

    Gymnastics
    5th and 6th Grade Students must have a current physical on file to participate. A flyer will be in the office at the beginning of the school year. Practices are at the Merrillville High School in the Gymnastics' room. 




    Newspaper Staff
    Newspaper includes 5th & 6th Grade students. 40 students are chosen  in September from turned in applications. They produce 5 school papers a school year. 

    P.E.A.R.L.S.
    Pretty Elegant Articulate Respectful Young Ladies Society
    It is a charm club for young 5th & 6th Grade girls. We engage in lots of community service projects, talk about issues that may be concerning them at their age and teach them to love and respect themselves as well as others.  They also will be exposed to events outside of the community of Merrillville.  

    S.N.A.P.P.
    Students Never Accepting Peer Pressure
    Students (5th and 6th Graders) try out for this Dance Troupe that perform during the MIS Black History Program in February. They also do activities throughout the school year.

    Spell Bowl
    Spell Bowl is made up of 5th & 6th Grade students. On the Thursday after Labor Day, students complete a "spell off" from the word list that was available in the MIS Library the previous May. The top 15 students are chosen. Past Spell Bowl students have won Regional honors. The Spell Bowl Competition is in November.

    Socially Together And Naturally Diverse

    We stand up against hate and injustice that we ourselves may experience because of the simple fact that we may be different. Let's Celebrate Diversity! Any student may join the club. The STAND Club meet every Wednesday after school from 2:30-3:05

     

    MAC Swimming
    Merrillville Acquatic Club Swimming
    Students must have a current physical on file to participate. Practices are at the Merrillville High School pool.




    Wrestling-Fall/Winter
    Students must have a current physical on file to participate. Any 5th or 6th Grade boy may participate. Students practice and have matches with 7th & 8th Grade students from Pierce.

    Yearbook Staff
    Yearbook includes 5th & 6th Grade students. 20 students are chosen in November from turned in applications. The students design the 64 all color inside pages. The yearbook comes out in May.
