Thirty-eight MHS Choir students participated in the ISSMA State Solo and Ensemble contest at Perry Meridian High School Saturday in Indianapolis. Merrillville High School choir brought home 102 gold and 2 silver medals. Medals were awarded to 14 gold soloists, two silver soloists, and 6 gold ensembles.
Gold medals were awarded to Will Akins, Sarah Bradash, Waymon Cruse, Cassie Govert, Cherise Higgins, Cynthia Hindmon, Shelby Holden, Cassidy Koontz, Elaija Mayo, RaShawn Mills, Leanne Powell, Kiera Shackelford, Tyreak Thomas and Quanisha Vaughn. Silvers were earned by Lacy Bridgeman and Wynonna Wagonblast.
Gold medal ensembles were the Merrillville Seniors (15 members), Vocalteen Men (9 members), Choralteen Women (20 members), Shackelford ensemble (4 members), and the Choralteen Purple and Choralteen White ensembles, each with 20 participants.
A perfect "9" was awarded to the Shackelford "Poor Man Lazarus" ensemble. Near Perfect "9.5" scores were received by Kiera Shackelford and Choralteen Women ensemble.
Side note---Ms. Miller and Pierce Middle School also sent two students to the state competition: 8th grader Jovana Long received a silver medal and 7th grader Lucas Reinhart scored a perfect "9" to earn his gold medal.
The canned /non-perishable goods gathered at the Contest Concert for admission totaled 473 items. Ross Township officials will pick up the choir department's donation Friday afternoon. Pictures are attached.
Thank you to Mr. David Arroyo and Ms. Courtney Miller for helping our program develop our young singers at the middle school level.
