Students in this course will be exposed to a variety of genres, including the short story, poetry, drama, folk tales, and non-fiction pieces. Works by members of various cultural and ethnic minorities, including Native Americans and African-Americans, are included in the syllabus to provide a comprehensive study of the American experience through literature. Written and oral exercises require students to analyze and explain how culture and literature are interconnected and distinctly American.
