Dear John Wood Elementary School Community:

I want to extend a “Welcome” to those families new to our school or community. We are glad you are here! Hopefully, this year will be filled with tremendous opportunity for growth.

Our very special elementary school has a great deal to offer.  Our students are fortunate to have many different opportunities. In addition to a strong focus on the academics, we provide Art, Music, Library and Technology, Physical Education, and Special Education programs.

In conjunction with our PTO (which I encourage all of our parents to join!) numerous family events are scheduled throughout the year, offering families the opportunity to learn together and to socialize with others.

As a member of the Merrillville Community School Corporation, I recognize that all of us have work to do. We will carefully examine data and base our instruction upon what our students truly need. Under the guidance and support of our Superintendent, we embrace new materials, innovative ideas, and considerations for how to improve. We work collaboratively and we meet regularly as a staff to study, to learn, and to plan for the success of each child.

As we proceed through this school year, a year where change is guaranteed, we will maintain our focus on each child as an individual. As a highly qualified staff, we will provide quality instruction for all students. I encourage all parents and guardians to get involved in their child’s education by reading all home/school correspondence, helping with your child’s homework, reading with your child often, and volunteering in classrooms whenever possible.

I have very high expectations for our teachers, parents, students, community and myself. I believe by working together our children will become confident life-long learners. I believe together we can do great things for children. I am thrilled to be a part of this tremendous school community.

Very sincerely,

Teri Crussen
